The Finals - Game 4: Spurs sweep Cavaliers after Mills go-ahead 3PTer, win 98-101 (4-0).

With the shot clock set to expire, Patty Mills came through.
The Cavaliers finally got going in this series, but it was just too late and the basketball overseers would not let the San Antonio Spurs be denied. With the game deadlocked at 98-all, the shot clock went off as Patty Mills caught a desperate pass behind the 3PT line, letting the ball fly over two defenders--as it splashed in.

Mills' huge dagger would be the death knell for the Cavaliers, who failed to score in the final seconds despite a powerful showing in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, looking like the series would at least be going back to Texas for one more game. JR Smith hit a stepback 3PTer over Kawhi Leonard on the fast break to take an 85-88 lead with 3:45 remaining. Iman Shumpert would get hacked and make both free throws for the Spurs. LeBron James would make a layup over the defense, only to get the ball stolen next by a Shumpert/Gasol double team, only to steal it back from Kawhi Leonard, only for Leonard to pressure James into an errant pass up court that went long.

Kawhi's 3PTer would careen down the court, as LeBron recovered the loose ball for a smooth bank-shot for an 87-92 advantage. Leonard would redeed himself, making a long ball from the same spot. Tristan Thompson would miss a contested layup. Parker would dish the ball to Biyombo who would drive toward the rim but kick it back out to Leonard on the opposite wing this time, as Kawhi made a second 3PTer to give the Spurs the 93-92 lead. Dwyane Wade's hook shot would get stuffed at the rim by Biyombo, Shumpert would make 1 of 2 free throws, and Kyle Korver would make a layup (94-all, again). Pau Gasol would get free down low for the easy lay-in next as the final minute began.

Wade would draw the foul on Kawhi Leonard's full-court press (giving him 5 fouls) and make both free throws (with San Antonio in the penalty). Leave it to Pau Gasol once more to make a sweet and polished one-footed fadeaway off glass past Kevin Love for the 98-96 lead. Kevin Love would strike back after the timeout called by Cleveland, stepping past Josh Smith for the mid-range jumper.

29 seconds left, after a Spurs timeout. Inbound to Mills, pass to Kawhi, LeBron stiffs him with solid defense, shot clock down to 4.8s, Wade probing between Leonard and Mills, Kawhi dishes it to Patty. Wade is right there, hand up over Mills eye toward the basket, but he just misses the block attempt by mere inches. Cameras flash, the crowd's collective hands fall onto their heads with shock and dread.

Kevin Love made the last shot for the Cavaliers in the Finals.
19.1 seconds now for the Cavaliers, inbound to Kevin Love. He misses the 3PTer, ball bounces around to LeBron James, whose tip-in also misses, the ball rolling slowly off the rim like a magnet being repelled by fate, as it were. The ball is gathered by Thompson, who dishes it quickly to James, who is open at the top of the key, yet the Cavaliers trail by 3 points. He passes it Dwyane Wade, whose 3PTer sails past Patty Mills, his defense not nearly as strong, but the ball bangs off the front of the rim, with 4 seconds left on the clock in the NBA Finals.

Only for Bismack Biyombo's big hands to yank the ball into San Antonio's possession. He passes quickly to Mills, who passes even more quickly to Josh Smith speeding up the court to run out the clock, and he passes to Kawhi Leonard who officially ends Cleveland's chances. The Spurs only won the field goal percentage and 3PT shooting columns tonight (52% to 45%; 45% to 43%). The Cavaliers missed one free throw, which would have probably meant LeBron taking that final shot (as they would only have been down by 2 points). Cleveland won every other column, 28 in fast break points, 44 points in the paint, 12 second chance points, 32 assists, 51 rebounds to San Antonio's 39. They even scored more in the final quarter (31-28), but a 27-22 start by the Spurs was enough as they also edged Cleveland 27-24 in the 3rd quarter. The Cavaliers had 10 steals on the night, but the Spurs had 14 blocks--including Biyombo on Wade late in the game.

Pau Gasol was stunning in the Finals, winning MVP honors.

Kawhi Leonard had 24 points, hitting those two huge 3PTers for his squad when they were on the brink of defeat, (6-9 from distance) with 2 blocks. Pau Gasol would receive Finals MVP honors, scoring 24 points with 8 rebounds here to go with 4 blocks. Patty Mills had just 14 points, including the shot of the Finals. Tony Parker had 13 points with 7 assists and Bismack Biyombo had 10 points with 12 rebounds and 6 blocks. Every other Spur struggled in this game, but as a unit, San Antonio was able to end things in dramatic fashion no less, but with promise as they will certainly be asking if they can do it yet again.

In the loss, LeBron James had 19 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. JR Smith had 16 points. Tristan Thompson had 14 points with 9 rebounds. Dwyane Wade was 3-20 for just 11 points and 6 assists. Kyle Korver had 10 points; Kevin Love had 13 rebounds on just 9 points. Pau Gasol averaged 19.8 points and 7.8 rebounds on 69% shooting and 55% from 3PT territory with 3.8 assists, 2.3 blocks, 1.3 steals and just 1.0 turnovers per game for a very worthy Finals MVP award.

The Finals - Game 3: Spurs dominate Cavaliers, stave off late rally (3-0).

Despite a nice start, the Cavaliers were blown out in Game 3.
The Cavaliers had a strong first quarter, but as the game went on, it became clear that the home team was fighting from behind and it only got worse. It eventually became interesting, as LeBron James willed his team into a notable rally, but the Spurs had been simply too strong.

San Antonio crushed Cleveland 27-14 in the second quarter to lead 13 points at halftime only to win the 3rd quarter as well 35-26. The Spurs went into the decisive quarter, up 89-67 with a crowd of dismay as witnesses. The Cavaliers would finally win the 4th quarter 38-24, but it still wasn't enough as the Spurs claimed a 3-0 victory, 113-105--a game the Cavaliers really needed.

Kevin Love had a strong showing with 27 points (10-14%) and 14 rebounds. LeBron James had 22 points also with 14 rebounds and 5 assists but shot just 4-11 from 3PT distance. Isaiah Thomas had 18 points on 7-10 shooting with 9 assists, but the rest of Cleveland struggled, making only 32% of its long-range attempts and committing 16 turnovers.

Meanwhile, Patty Mills had 29 points on 7 three-pointers with 7 assists. Kawhi Leonard had a cool 20 points and Pau Gasol's double-double (16 points, 8 rebounds) with two blocks sealed this win. Bismack Biyombo had 12 rebounds and 3 blocks. Mario Hezonja came back down to earth on 4-11 shooting for 12 points, but Jeremy Lamb chipped in 14 points to help matters.

The Finals - Game 2: Spurs top Cavaliers, 117-126 (2-0).

Leonard and James went to war tonight
The Cavaliers, under the gun of a 0-1 deficit, pressed its defense from the tip-off, energized by a supportive home crowd at Quicken Loans Arena. Cleveland would use a 13-2 to take the lead, with its King battling with Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs were burdened early by turnovers from Tony Parker, normally a strong ball-handler, leading to easy scores for the Cavs.

Mario Hezonja was a bright spot for San Antonio, though, as was the Spurs team defense overall. Jeremy Lamb would also provide a nice spark, as the Spurs regrouped for a 55-63 score at halftime. Notably, Pau Gasol secured a nasty block on Dwyane Wade at the rim, sending the former Heat star crashing to the floor. At the half, San Antonio shot 61% to Cleveland's 43% with the Spurs winning the glass.

A second 13-2 run by the Cavaliers would kick off the 3rd quarter, despite a nice reverse layup by Tony Parker past Dwyane Wade. "Flash" would respond with a crowd-wowing dunk, and LeBron would make an impressive 3PTer for a 69-68 advantage.

The Spurs would respond with solid ball movement and sturdy defense to carve out another lead, courtesy of an enviable two-man game between Patty Mills and Pau Gasol. Kawhi Leonard would splash in 3PTers, Iman Shumpert would chip in on defense with blocks as would Bismack Biyombo. Isaiah Thomas would begin to turn the ball over like Parker, too, as Biyombo claimed second chances on the offensive glass. Kawhi would make a strong jam after stealing the ball, as Mario Hezonja would make some shots from deep.

The lead would grow to 98-87 for the Spurs as Kawhi Leonard whipped a behind-the-back pass to Patty in the corner, who made the Cavaliers pay with his dead-eye. The Cavaliers would rally with their fans to cut the lead to 98-106. Tony Parker would make a 3PTer, but Wade would make some free throws, chasing the Spurs lead at 10 points. LeBron would make another 3PTer, but Kawhi made a floater over him, only for Wade to keep the Cavs in the running with a jumper. Kawhi would smack the ball away from James, but the King would recover the ball and throw down his fury at the rim, snarling famously for the highlight reel play.

Iman Shumpert would race up the court for a coast-to-coast layup past Cleveland's soft defense. Tristan Thompson would make both free throws to bring the Cavs within 8 points, and soon Cleveland would sneak within 6 points for an exciting close to this competitive second entry in the series. At 42 seconds left in the game, Kawhi Leonard would make a dagger 3PTer, receiving the MVP chant as he made two free throws once the Cavaliers resorted to intentional fouling. The Spurs won, 117-126, as the Cavaliers were never able to retake that lead it had in the first quarter.

Leonard shot 60% for 32 points, with two memorable blocks on LeBron (26pts/7rebs/8asts). Tristan Thompson had 20 points and 10 rebounds; Wade had a solid 19 points and 6 assists. Isaiah Thomas struggled, but managed 11 points with 6 assists as well. Kyle Korver had just ten points. Kevin Love and J.R. Smith had a frustrating night, combining for a 6-20 shooting display. At the horn, the Cavaliers shot only 44% and the Spurs 56% overall, including 45% from long range for the takers of a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals.

Mario Hezonja had 24 points in the victory, including 6 threes as he continues to be the surprise of the post-season for the Spurs; Patty Mills had 21 points on 5 three-pointers, Pau Gasol had 13 points with 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Bismack Biyombo had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

2/14/18

The Finals - Game 1: Spurs cruise past Cavaliers, win 95-119.

Dwyane Wade did hit a big-money 3PTer at the buzzer to end the first quarter, but that was arguably the lone highlight of the Cavaliers offense in this blowout only made worse by LeBron James suffering a poke to the eye.

The King would still contribute 21 points, but was clearly having trouble hitting shots due to the injury (He sat for most of the whole second quarter). Meanwhile, the Spurs were on fire.

The lead at first became 11 points, but then climbed to 30 at one point (71-101). The Cavaliers went from shooting 37% at halftime to a modest 41% increase, far behind the 50%+ effort by San Antonio. Cleveland's percentage was not helped by Isaiah Thomas, despite hitting his first three-pointer, for his 4-15 shooting night. I.T. managed 10 points and 6 assists, but he also had four turnovers to help bury the Cavaliers into an 0-1 deficit.

The Spurs led 43-61 at halftime. Bismack Biyombo led the defensive dominance with 3 blocks, benefiting from Cleveland's poor shooting night with 14 rebounds. On a tremendous display of defense, several Spurs players combined for three blocks on one possession. On the other end of the court, yet another 3PTer splashed in for Spur-fection. Leonard would have just 12 points, resting for most of the second half once the blowout was underway.

Tony Parker and Mario Hezonja both had 11 points, but it was Pau Gasol's time to shine. He had 26 points on a masterful 11-15 shooting showcase, making 3 shots from long range as well to go with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block and 2 steals. Patty Mills had a solid 18 points with 5 assists (four threes); Jeremy Lamb got his shot going from both mid-range and 3PT territory for 14 points; Josh Smith had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. The Spurs shot 44% from 3PT range, whilst the Cavaliers committed 16 turnovers. San Antonio had a combined 20 steals and blocks on Cleveland. The Cavaliers ate this loss after making only 30% of their 3PT attempts. Kevin Love had just 10 points and 13 rebounds; Tristan Thompson had 12 rebounds. Jae Crowder had 11 points with 7 rebounds.

2/12/18

Western Conference Finals - Game 5: Spurs outlast Warriors, 132-125 (4-1)

Pau Gasol's huge 3PTer sealed this series-clinching victory.
The pressure was on for the Spurs in this possible final game in the series. It would see the Spurs winning, but it did not seem to be. San Antonio called timeout with four minutes left, after Kevin Durant had made three straight 3PTers to give the Warriors a 104-112 lead.

Then Kawhi Leonard put on a show, hitting a 3PTer. Jordan Bell would get a nice jam next, but another corner shot by Leonard would bring the Spurs to 109-114. Patty Mills would strip Steph Curry, leading to another 3PT bomb by Leonard (112-114). Curry would dupe the double-team (that SA had been deploying all game long to moderate success) giving Durant an easy layup on the fast break. Kawhi would, again, hit a 3PTer (115-116). Iman Shumpert would block Durant at the rim on a dunk attempt, then Patty Mills would catch a pass from Leonard in transition for a corner 3PTer that rattled in, giving the Spurs the comeback lead (118-116) with 3 minutes left, capping off a 14-4 run.

Leave it to Steph Curry to make a splash from 3PT territory on the ensuing play (118-119); Curry finished with 17 points (7-14%) and 15 assists. Klay Thompson was the high-point man for Golden State. A double-clutch shot down low over Durant went in for Leonard, who made the free throw (121-119). Thompson would miss a wide-open wing three-ball next, alas, as did Kevin Durant after a steal. Bismack Biyombo would be fouled on a strip attempt gone awry, making both free throws to shush the "Waaaarrioors" chanting by the crowd (123-119) at the two-minute warning. Draymond Green would dunk it home off a slick pass by Curry (123-121). Tony Parker would dish it way down the court to a streaking Bismack Biyombo for a terrific slam (125-121), outdone by Jordan Bell on the next fast break (125-123) in this back-and-forth duel.

Iman Shumpert would miss a good shot attempt from long range, but so would Curry from that hapless spot where Thompson & Durant had also missed. A turnover by Shumpert would lead to a layup for Klay Thompson (29 points), knotting the score at last with 49.5 seconds left. Pau Gasol would hit a bunny at the rim, giving the Spurs the 127-125 advantage. An inbound after a timeout led to an instant 3PT attempt by Curry, as Tony Parker gave too much space, but Curry misfired, the ball bouncing in-and-out. 30 seconds remaining, Tony Parker found himself with 5 seconds left on the shot clock. A screen attempt by Gasol failed, as Green blocked it from behind, facing down Parker, but Curry was switched onto Gasol as a result with Draymond Green covering Parker at the center of the 3PT line. The Spaniard would spin loose from Curry, stepping behind the 3PT line at the right wing. Parker would catch the opportunity, dish the rock to Gasol and watch him make the shot of the series to give the Spurs a decisive 130-125 lead. The Warriors could only bow their heads, knowing they were 5 seconds away from a possible shot attempt being missed and potentially having the ball with the chance to take the lead or tie the game with 16 seconds left in the game.

The inbound to Durant would be stripped by Kawhi Leonard, as the Spurs regained the ball, drawing the foul, making both free throws. Final score, 132-125. Omri Casspi would take a 3PTer, but would miss. The Spurs would run out the clock, as the crowd fell into a constant "Booooo!" as the Western Conference Finals trophy was handed to Kawhi Leonard, Coach Popovich clapping in support of his team.

Klay Thompson would embrace new-Spur Mario Hezonja (whose play recently had propelled him into the starting lineup), likely seeing some of his own game in the cocky but promising Croatian. Previously on the Magic, Hezonja had his team option denied by Orlando before he was traded to San Antonio. Now on Twitter, the NBA fanbase has said things like: "Predicting Hezonja to be 6MOY (sixth man of the year) candidate after leaving Orlando." Clearly, the Spurs like what they're seeing out of him, as they now face one more meeting with the Cavaliers.

Western Conference Finals - Game 4: Spurs top Warriors

Kawhi Leonard would not be defeated.
Kawhi Leonard had one hell of a performance in this pivotal victory for the San Antonio Spurs, who led by as much as 28 points at one point, winning the first quarter 20-36, the 2nd quarter 28-35, before the Warriors rally inevitably started. The Warriors scored 42 points in the 3rd quarter, and 33 in the final period; the Spurs still held on for a 3-1 advantage.

Turnovers were a problem for both teams (16 and 19 respectively), but Kawhi Leonard was the source of strength tonight: The Claw had 49 points making 9 three-pointers with 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks (including a swat on KD at the rim in crunch time and a layup attempt by Curry on the break). Leonard had 30 points in the first half!

The Spurs bench, once again, reigned supreme (15-39). Tony Parker had 14 points with 8 assists (hitting two 3PT bombs to preserve the lead during the Warriors push); Mario Hezonja had 12 points and Josh Smith had 10 points with 7 rebounds and 1 block. Patty Mills struggled to find his deadeye, but had 11 points and 9 assists. Bismack Biyombo had a clutch steal in the final minute (2 total in the game) and 6 rebounds. Josh Smith and Jeremy Lamb did not score much, but each Spur had a furious dunk when it mattered most.

For the Warriors, Jordan Bell had a career-high 25 points with 9 rebounds. Steph Curry had an inconsistent night shooting the ball, but finished with 20 assists to go with 22 points. Klay Thompson had 22 points, as well. Add Kevin Durant to that list, and you see how the Warriors had enough firepower to close the gap late. They never got close enough, and soon enough the game was in its final minute with an insurmountable lead as San Antonio held onto the ball. Draymond Green had 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

Western Conference Finals - Game 3: Warriors win at buzzer, 109-108 (1-2)

Klay Thompson's layup at the buzzer saved the Warriors
Two controversial shots would happen in this showdown, the fatal one coming at the buzzer and not a moment sooner or later, according to the referees at the replay center, as Klay Thompson kept the Warriors for swallowing a 3-0 deficit.

Steph Curry (26 points, 10-24 FG%/3-11 3P%, 10 assists) would miss with under 2 seconds left on the clock, only for the loose ball to bounce toward the other Splash Bro to save the day. An extensive replay process followed, and it became evident, to the chagrin and uproar of the San Antonio crowd, that the layup just barely was off before the red lights came.

Golden State finished the 4th quarter 37-29, as Kawhi Leonard could only contribute 22 points. Mario Hezonja had a nice game with 21 points on 6 three-pointers, but the Warriors had its big three come through. Kevin Durant had 20 points with 7 assists, as did Klay. Jordan Bell had 13 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Draymond Green also had a nice double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

In the loss, the Spurs bench proved superior 47-19, but its stars struggled: Pau Gasol had just 14 points and 8 rebounds; Tony Parker with 16 points and 7 assists. It looked hopeful at first, due to Patty Mills being unable to play through his ankle injury, as Dejounte Murray had 11 points. Josh Smith had 10 points and 11 rebounds with 5 assists.

The Spurs will need to defend home court in Game 4 to avoid the pendulum swing of a 2-2 series deadlock going back to California.

Western Conference Finals - Game 2: Spurs defeat Warriors, 122-111 (2-0)

Steph Curry played a great game, but the Spurs spoiled his night.
In dramatic fashion, after a remarkable defense by San Antonio to hold the smallest of leads, in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Steph Curry took over this game and made everyone believe it was about to turn into a home victory, until a terrible turnover took place, an unbelievable shot went in by Kawhi Leonard, and then, well--another one.

The crowd fell silent.

It began with the Spurs going up by 11 points after the first quarter, out-shooting the Warriors. Steph was far more aggressive out of the starting block, unlike in Game 1. However, before long, the Spurs proved to be too strong and Curry began to force shots from way out ('Wow!' shots he's made in the past, mind you), giving the defending champions opportunity to increase it to a 20 point advantage. The Warriors would rally back here and there, but the Kawhi Leonard would hit a shot at the buzzer going into the final period, his team up 94-82. A furious pace had set the outcome in this game, despite Golden State struggling to score a high amount in the first half.

Chef Curry would hit a huge 3PTer, like he does so well, to tie the game as San Antonio had previously clutched a hair-thin lead in the final minutes--all NBA fans on pins and needles for this one, completing the comeback to knot the score at 111-all. The cherry-on-top (unfortunately so) appeared to be an ankle twist for Patty Mills, who had to be pulled from the game. The Spurs plan to rest him in Game 3, back in San Antonio. This comeback was preceded by a block on Tony Parker by Draymond Green.

Then, Curry lost the ball, hounded by Tony Parker and Pau Gasol. A mad scramble took place, the ball rolling out of bounds--last touch by Stephen Curry. Iman Shumpert would catch an inbound pass from Kawhi Leonard (36 points, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals) for an awesome dunk. Then Shumpert would steal the ball on the next possession for yet another jam. The lead was now back to 4 points.

And it only got worse.

The inbound to Kawhi Leonard would cause Durant to foul him on a 3PT shot attempt. Leonard, falling out of bounds, would somehow make this shot, increasing the Spurs lead to seven after an even score in less than seven game-time seconds. Klay Thompson would miss a 3PTer after yet another timeout by Golden State (its final one), only for Leonard to bury the Warriors with a final bomb from long range. The Spurs went up 122-111, in a matter of mere seconds. In those few seconds, the Warriors went from having the Spurs on the brink of a 1-1 split to falling to a 0-2 hole, going back to the opponent's home turf.

It goes to show...anything can happen in the NBA.

In the heartbreaking loss, Curry finished with 29 points and 17 assists (including seven threes), but 9 ominous turnovers. Andre Iguodala had 18 points to Kevin Durant's meager 17 points (0-2 3PT%) and Klay Thompson's putrid 13-point showing. The rookie Jordan Bell just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. For the Spurs, Pau Gasol was a big part of this win: 27 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jeremy Lamb was a nice spark (after struggling so far in the playoffs) with 10 points. Before his injury, Patty Mills had 18 points. The Spurs shot 41% from 3PT territory, whereas the Warriors went 9-30.

Tonight proved to be the type of inspiration that a team without Rudy Gay needed to press onward. Going into Game 3, the Spurs have a bonafide chance to take total control in this series.

Western Conference Finals - Game 1: Spurs win 117-114 (1-0)

Spurs. Warriors. Durant. Kawhi.

Durant hit a 3PTer early, drawing the foul on his foe for a four-point play, wowing the Oakland crowd. He would spoil it by fouling Leonard in return, whose 3PTer did not go in, but Kawhi did make all three attempts at the charity stripe.

The Warriors led by 33-25 after the first quarter, but the Spurs stayed in striking distance. It proved of merit as a run took place led by Pau Gasol and Mario Hezonja, a 15-5 swing. The Spurs became the leader of the long ball for a moment, Leonard and then Parker splashing from deep. Kawhi would miss at the buzzer to end the half, with the Warriors recovering the lead by one point, 57-58.

Leonard had 10 points; Durant had 17 points. Both would wind up in foul trouble, however.

San Antonio's defense would rev-up in the 3rd quarter, as the Spurs went blow-for-blow against Golden State, the Warriors being forced to watch Kawhi hit a three-point haymaker at the buzzer. The defending champions went into the final period with an 89-83 lead on the road: can't ask for more! Leonard would also block Durant at the basket and then drain a cold-blooded 3PTer in transition.

By this point, Patty Mills had become a scoring terror, having his own duel with Steph Curry (adding to their college-gone-pro rivalry), just sensational in this game: 31 points on 60% shooting, with 8 assists and seven 3PTers (12-19). Kevin Durant would have 24 points (only 8 in second half). Klay Thompson would have 21 points; Draymond Green had 18 points with 10 rebounds. Steph Curry was not much for scoring in this first bout, with only 14 points but showing off his court vision with 18 assists.

Uncharacteristically, Draymond Green and Steph Curry would miss vital 3PTers in the clutch, leading to Pau Gasol making free throws for a four point advantage. Steph Curry would hit a second attempt from long range at the buzzer, but the Spurs happily seized this road victory, setting the tone for this contentious showdown of a series. Kawhi Leonard finished with 30 points (20 in the second half); Gasol had 16 points with 9 rebounds and 2 blocks; Bismack Biyombo had 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Hezonja had 16 points off the bench, sparking that early run for the Spurs.

2/11/18

Josh Smith erupts for 27 points, as Spurs eliminate Rockets 98-121 (4-1).

The Spurs will move on to face their nemesis, the Golden State Warriors, but first they had to destroy the Rockets and hold Houston below 100 points for the first time in this series, winning 98-121 behind powerful play from Josh Smith. The former Rockets player had 27 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks as the Spurs dominated all game long. Kawhi Leonard had 17 points, before the Spurs rested their stars in the final period.

Jeremy Lamb had a nice contribution with 15 points, as did Patty Mills with 12 points and Davis Bertans, the sharpshooter prospect with 12 points. The Spurs shot 48% from 3PT range in this beating, similar to how the Spurs eliminated the Jazz.

The Houston Rockets might as well have eliminated themselves, missing 13 free throws as a team. James Harden was just 6-14 with 16 points and 5 assists. Clint Capela had 16 points and 10 rebounds, showing promise as a premier big man of the future, but CP3 had a poor effort in this elimination game.

Now, the Warriors await the Spurs at Oracle Arena to decide the king of the west.

Game 4: "The Spurs are just dominating this game!"

Kawhi Leonard had a cool 28 points in this blowout.
Kawhi Leonard had 20 points in the first quarter, putting the Spurs up by 12, and then up by 20 points, leading 64-51 at the half. The Spurs shot 62% in the first half, winning the rebound war, as Bismack Biyombo also blocked Clint Capela three straight times on the same possession.

The Rockets would cut it down to 10 points, but soon the Spurs would recuperate and lead 97-71 after the third quarter, just suffocating the Rockets usual high-octane offense, winning 118-105 to take a commanding 3-1 advantage.

Leonard was just superb, shooting 11-14 and 4-4 from distance. Pau Gasol had 16 points and 6 rebounds, making two long balls. Iman Shumpert, again, had a nice showing with 2 blocks and 11 points. Biyombo had 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 steals to go with those 3 blocks. Josh Smith was the defensive monster tonight, with a career-high 7 blocks to go with 10 points, 3 steals and 8 rebounds. Tony Parker chipped in 8 points with 8 assists. Clint Capela was the lone star for Houston with 22 points and 16 rebounds. James Harden had 16 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds; Chris Paul had 16 points with 12 assists, but committed four turnovers.

The wheels just fell off for Houston in this one, to the shock of the home crowd as this series now moves back to San Antonio.

Spurs recover to defeat Rockets in Game 3 in Houston, win 125-105.

The Spurs responded strongly to begin Game 3, threes falling, defense on point, especially by Josh Smith (subbing in for Rudy Gay) from disrupting passing lanes. J-Smoove and Iman Shumpert proved to be an insufferable duo tonight, with Shumpert taking MVP honors. He had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals--tormenting Harden all night long. Spur-fection came to life, leading 64-48 at halftime on 62% shooting on the court. Every shot was contested, almost every free throw was made; the Spurs did everything right in this one to earn a victory.

James Harden was even seeing a double-team here and there, turning the ball over and causing 3PT bombs on the other side of the court in the fast break. Tony Parker even blocked Chris Paul. A 12-0 run by the Spurs sealed this victory. Josh Smith had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Kawhi Leonard had a solid 21 points. Pau Gasol had 17 points and 8 rebounds. Mario Hezonja helped out from the bench with 15 points and 2 steals, making up for Rudy Gay's absence in the scoring column.

The Spurs shot 41% from 3PT territory and crushed Houston's bench this time around, winning the scoring battle in all four quarters. Chris Paul had 13 points with 12 assists, but Harden only scored 15 as this series now moves to a 2-1 lead for the Spurs heading into Game 4.

Rockets down Spurs, 123-109; Spurs lose Rudy Gay.

The Rockets led 63-47, just on fire from long range in this second game of the series. Houston would even go up by almost 30 points in the 3rd quarter, before a thunderous Spurs rally would fall short. San Antonio would manage to cut the lead to 5 points, but just couldn't hit the shots they needed. A 3PTer by Chris Paul sealed it.

What made matters worse was Rudy Gay's injury, a high ankle sprain, that will sideline him for the entirety of the playoffs from this point onward. Gay was the main source of the rally too with 16 quick points, so when he went down and stayed down, the crowd fell into an ominous slumber. The Rockets were led by 23 points by "The Beard" and his 6 assists; Chris Paul had 10 points with 13 assists. Clint Capela had a nice double-double, 12 points and 21 rebounds, and Eric Gordon came alive with 18 points on 4-6 three-pointers. Ryan Anderson gave Houston 16 points and 11 rebounds. Gerald Green, recent addition, chipped in 15 points off the bench, giving the Spurs yet another deadly shooter to worry about. Houston's bench dominated 51 to 25 in this game.

Leonard and Mills had 26 points and 21 points with 8 assists, respectively, but it wasn't enough. Biyombo had 13 rebounds, and Gasol had 12 points with 9 rebounds.

Losing Gay will force the Spurs to adjust their rotation, as injuries are never a good thing in the playoffs.

2/7/18

Spurs hold off Rockets, win 113-120.

Kawhi's near-steal in the final seconds made all the difference.
The Rockets were still in striking distance in the final minute and Harden had that ice-cold look in his eyes, but Kawhi Leonard's "claw"-like hands knocked away the ball. Harden would recover it, but too much time had gone by as Ryan Anderson forced up a shot that misfired, the Spurs surviving Game 1.

Houston showed what we all knew already in that they will pose a formidable threat to the Spurs' chances of making the Western Conference Finals this year, as the Spurs struggled in the first quarter--particularly Kawhi. Luckily, San Antonio would make a sizable run (20-1) in the second quarter, giving themselves a lead courtesy of their long range skill and defensive stoppage.

Tony Parker (23pts/6asts/8-12%/3-4 3PT%) would spark the Spurs late after a poor showing by Patty Mills (9pts), making 3PTers and driving to the rim past the long arms of Clint Capela (16pts/13rebs). Kawhi would eventually get going, finishing with 18 points on just 5-14 shooting. Gasol was solid in this game, despite missing some long range attempts; he finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Bismack Biyombo was not his most effective self tonight, but he did have 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 crucial blocks that sparked runs for the Spurs up the court.

The Rockets and Spurs were neck-and-neck in the column war. San Antonio won points in the paint, including a furious bench effort (63-27); Houston won the rebound war and the assist battle. Both teams were proficient from long range: Spurs shot 41% to Houston's 38%. The Rockets made several long balls in the clutch, however, especially Chris Paul (22 points, 6-12 3PT%). James Harden was Mr. Distribution tonight, with 14 assists behind just 17 points--as Leonard hounded him all game long.

San Antonio would close things out at the free throw line as Leonard and Parker sealed this victory. The bench included 9 points by Bryn Forbes; 11 & 11 by Rudy Gay and 10 points by Jeremy Lamb--including a sick jam past Capela. Rudy Gay would hit a clutch three-pointer for a five-point lead, forcing the Rockets to foul in the final minute.

Spurs annihilate Jazz in Game 5, win 96-131.

Rudy Gay (29 points) scorched the Jazz out of the playoffs
The Spurs erupted for a 39-24 scoring advantage in the second quarter, and then brutalized the Jazz 38-14 in the 3rd quarter, at one moment leading by nearly 50 points, lurking around 35-40 for most of the second half in what was an ugly showing by the Jazz, a team suffocated by the Spurs mighty defense.

The Spurs shot 51%, breaking even with the Jazz down low, winning the fast break battle, and dominating with their bench. The team had 7 blocks and 16 steals, watching the Jazz commit 19 turnovers. Rudy Gay was the man of the hour, scoring 29 points on 11-16 shooting, with 2 steals and a block as well.

Mario Hezonja had 14 points once again showing confidence, despite tweaking his ankle late. Reports indicate he may just miss a single game, or may be good to go as the Spurs benefit from rest days due to winning this series early. Kawhi Leonard had 13 points, but Coach Popovich wisely rested his stars before and definitely after Hezonja's injury scare. Patty Mills hit a clutch three-pointer to ice that huge lead for the Spurs. Pau Gasol had 12 points as did Mills; Tony Parker hit two bombs from long range for 11 points.

But the other story of the night was Bismack Biyombo's terrific 17 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Iman Shumpert had 13 points, outscoring his nemesis Donovan Mitchell, who couldn't get into a rhythm all night long. Ricky Rubio had just 8 points and 8 assists, sporting a face mask, losing the ball six times to make matters worse. Rudy Gobert had just 8 rebounds and 2 points; Favors had 7 rebounds with 11 points, the high number in scoring for any Jazz player in this beat-down.

Moving forward, the Spurs look most likely to face the Rockets next in the semi-finals, as they hold a 3-2 lead over the Clippers. The Golden State Warriors lead 3-1 over the Trailblazers; and the Cavaliers have a 3-2 lead over the gutsy Pacers. The Thunder look ready to close out the Pelicans as well. As the playoffs continue, it looks like Warriors/Thunder and Rockets/Spurs and probably Bucks/Cavaliers and 76ers/Raptors out east.

Spurs win Game 4 in Utah, 121-112; take 3-1 lead.

Rudy Gay came back to life in Game 4 with 25 points.
Right out the gate, the Spurs established hustle on defense and set the tone in this game. Utah would fight back and make it competitive, but the Spurs had a dominant first and third quarter that ultimately was the decisive factor.

Rudy Gay was woke from his Game 3 slumber, scoring 25 points and nabbing one steal, shooting 8-14 in just 19 minutes. A nice contribution came from Dejounte Murray, raining down 3 shots from deep, six assists and 16 points off the bench due to Patty Mills and Tony Parker struggling to be effective. Pau Gasol had 19 points, shooting a solid 8-13 as well. Kawhi Leonard had just 15 points, shooting 6-9, and again Mario Hezonja chipped in 12 points from the bench, looking confident in his increased role. Iman Shumpert had 10 points, 1 steal and 1 block against Donovan Mitchell's 15 points on an ugly 6-16 shooting performance.

Derrick Favors was the high man for the Jazz, with 19 points and 10 rebounds, but the Spurs iced out Favors and Gobert whenever they got the ball away from the basket, making it tough for Utah's wings and guards to get a leg up on the Spurs defense. Ricky Rubio would also suffer a broken nose in this one late, distributing just 8 assists due to the defensive dominance by San Antonio, but the Jazz say he will mask up and be able to play in Game 5 back in Texas. Rudy Gobert had 14 points and 15 rebounds. The Spurs won the bench column in this pivotal Game 4, and also only committed 6 turnovers to Utah's 13, stopping the Jazz's momentum with 10 blocks.

Jazz edge Spurs in contentious Game 3, win 115-120 at home.

The Spurs went down by 10 points and Utah would grow their lead, but the defending champions would cut the score to three points in the final minute, before the Jazz pulled away, making the Spurs fight all night long from behind. Utah devoured the paint in this game, with 56 points over SA's 28 as dominated did their bench, winning the assists column.

The Spurs committed too many fouls, as well, with Pau Gasol fouling out late scoring just 16 points and 8 rebounds. Patty Mills and Kawhi Leonard valiantly combined for 60 points (with Patty Mills setting a new playoff record for the team, making 10 three-pointers, keeping the team alive). Leonard nailed 6 by himself, respectively.

San Antonio's defense was just too deficient to stand a chance, as the Jazz shot 62% and 39% from 3PT range. The Spurs would score 45 points in the final quarter, but would be unable to steal this one. Donovan Mitchell was set loose with 23 points. Derrick Favors had 22 points and 8 rebounds. Rodney Hood had 15 points; Alec Burks had 11 points, and Ricky Rubio had 10 points this time to go with his 14 assists. Rudy Gobert scored low, but did had 12 rebounds and 1 key block late. Notably, Rudy Gay had an awful showing, an awful scoreless 0-8 on the court.

The Spurs just couldn't recover fully from a dominant third quarter by the Jazz, but will look to win the next game, to go up 3-1 in the series. But it will not be a sweep!

Spurs fend off hungry Jazz in Game 2, win 127-129.

Leonard was on-point tonight, shooting 10-17 and 7-11 from distance.
The Spurs held off the Jazz in Game 2, boosted by stellar play by Patty Mills (24 points, 8-13 from 3PT territory) and Kawhi Leonard's 28 points. In a surprise spark, Mario Hezonja dropped 22 points off the bench, shooting 6-10 and making four 3PTers for San Antonio, also nabbing two steals.

Pau Gasol had 15 points and 8 rebounds, but Bismack Biyombo had 15 rebounds and 11 points, to go with 3 blocks and 3 steals, the Spurs defense being the difference after trailing by a few points at the half. Mills hit a 3PTer at the buzzer trimming the lead to just 4 points.

Rudy Gobert had 19 points and 16 rebounds in the loss, but Derrick Favors fouled out with just 13 points. Donovan Mitchell was held to only 12 points, courtesy of Iman Shumpert's defense and Hezonja's feisty effort. Rodney Hood sported 16 points, as did Joe Ingles. Dante Exum had 12 points with 7 assists, and Ricky Rubio had just 14 assists, going scoreless from the field.

The Spurs shot 51% from 3PT land in this game, and the Jazz missed ten free throws (ultimately losing by just 2 points, kicking themselves), as the Spurs only missed 3 of their 25 FT attempts. Turnovers became an issue late for the Spurs, as they had 16 total in the game. Still, the champs took a 2-0 lead to the approval of the crowd at AT&T Center.

1/30/18

Spurs cruise to Game 1 victory, win 98-115.

Inserting Pau Gasol into the starting lineup over Rudy Gay to better contend with Utah's size down low, the Spurs soared to an early advantage in the opening game of this series, up by 15 points in just the first quarter, leading 59-46 at the half and boasting field goal percentage in the high fifties-to-sixty. The "Spur-fect" ball movement led to San Antonio leading in assists as a team, fast break points and rebounds as Utah's shooting suffered from the Spurs' strong defense.

Kawhi Leonard making threes, Patty Mills showing off his range (a perfect 3-3 from deep), Gasol scoring 21 points with 8 rebounds, 3 steals and Bismack Biyombo swatting 3 blocks and disrupting passing lanes. As soon as a turnover occurred by Utah, the Spurs were off down the court. Bryn Forbes would hit a 3PTer, or Rudy Gay (and his 20 points with 7 rebounds) would throw down a ferocious dunk on the break.

The Jazz would cut it within single digits here and there courtesy of Ricky Rubio's 11 assists and playmaking efforts, but in the 3rd quarter, the Spurs regained control and nearly led by thirty points, their highest lead being 27.

Iman Shumpert was tasked with making life difficult for rookie sensation Donovan Mitchell, and nearly outscored Mitchell, which was a nice result. Mitchell shot 5-15 from the floor, a disappointing 2-8 from long range courtesy of Shumpert hounding him. The Spurs big men combined for 12 rebounds, a pretty solid takeaway when facing Rudy Gobert, who dominated the glass for the Jazz with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Derrick Favors had 20 points and 12 rebounds on 8-13 shooting. Kawhi Leonard had 15 points, as well.

1/29/18

Spurs outlast Jazz, win final game for 66-16 record.

Coach Pop won COTY leading the Spurs to 66-16 in the west
Despite the Warriors having one more victory on their record (67-15), the Spurs celebrated its coach winning the award for Coach of the Year, taking the seasoned defending champions even higher to the 2nd best record in the league, amid roster changes including the promotion of Patty Mills to starting point guard, incorporating new players due to trades and helping rookies improve in the league.

Rudy Gay, Iman Shumpert, Jeremy Lamb and Bismack Biyombo have seen their careers take a nice spark of rejuvenation since becoming Spurs.

The Jazz put up a fight late in the fourth quarter, after the Spurs had taken a double-digit lead even with the third string taking over the resting stars. Dejounte Murray had a nice game with 12 points and 5 assists, but it was Rudy Gay's 21 points that sealed the game and quelled the late rally attempt by Utah. Sharpshooter Bryn Forbes also hit a dagger late from way out, showing his range.

The Spurs will not be away from Utah for long, as they've drawn the #7 seed Jazz in the first round, though they will look to take advantage of two home games in Texas to start the series. The Spurs have seen new players gel well for the most part, which is promising as the team aims to win yet another NBA championship.

Parker, Mills & Leonard lead Spurs past Blazers, 115-107.

Kawhi Leonard stepped up for the Spurs tonight.
A close, exciting game for almost three quarters, the Spurs and Blazers had a familiar fight. San Antonio was able to hold a small lead, but midway through the third period, the home team rallied ahead. However, a huge run led by Parker (including a 4-PT play) caused a double-digit advantage going into the final decisive quarter.

Kawhi Leonard was solid all-game, despite foul trouble, including a savage block on Damian Lillard, who had stolen the ball in the final minute with the game being anyone's for the taking. That key play would prove crucial as Kawhi hit a jumper on the break following that play and sealed it at the free throw line.

Coach Popovich thought he could trust his third string, but the Blazers would not be denied a photo finish in this contest, as Kawhi and Tony were brought back into the game. Bismack Biyombo's defense proved invaluable tonight, posting yet another double-double, with 2 blocks and 3 steals, and drawing a big foul with the lead within three points for Portland. He would only make one free throw, but it helped secure the lead amid the wild crowd after the team's comeback.

Patty Mills was electric from deep range, hitting four three-pointers in the first quarter. He hit some more wow! shots in the second half, too, finishing with six long balls and 27 points, also showing midrange proficiency on 10-15 shooting. Leonard had 29 points on 8-14 shooting with 2 blocks. Tony Parker had 12 points, cooling off after his remarkable 30 point showing in a win over the Clippers (103-97).

For the Trailblazers, Lillard had just 17 points and 9 assists on 6-18 shooting but hit some money 3PTers to cut the lead within striking distance. C.J. McCollum had 22 points (4-8 3PT%, 8-15%). The Blazers needed more help tonight, with 12 or so points from each other primary player not being enough to best San Antonio, even with a third player not scoring above average for the Spurs, who now moves to 65 wins with just one game left.

1/25/18

Spurs cruise past Thunder, Mavericks; lose to Grizzlies at last.

Mike Conley was able to play in Memphis' win over the Spurs, with 12 assists
After defeating its two worst foes, the San Antonio Spurs bested the O-K-3 pretty easily, even with Carmelo Anthony back on the court. Westbrook had a poor game, which allowed for the Spurs defense to crunch down on the rest of the Thunder.

The Grizzlies got their 'pound of flesh' in one last face-off, roaring past the Spurs behind Marc Gasol's tremendous second half performance (30 points) after struggling with foul trouble.

Mike Conley had been unavailable for most of this season series, which ended 3-1 in favor of San Antonio, but he did his part tonight, still not looking 100% but able to be a playmaker for the Grizzlies. The Spurs had some chances late, but Patty Mills' deadeye was not able to connect in the final minute, as the gritty rivalry put another season in the books. The Spurs fouled down the stretch, just because mostly.

Jeremy Lamb lit up the Mavericks, most recently, on the road, as the Spurs now have just four games remaining on the schedule, still a game behind the Golden State Warriors, but who's counting. The former Hornets guard had 30 points, showing off his whole offensive arsenal--mid range jumpers, dunks past defenders, a three-pointer here and there, a getting-better fadeaway, finishing layups in traffic and making free throws.

The Mavericks were just not able to get into a groove, with Bismack Biyombo controlling the glass for the Spurs and Patty Mills hitting a few shots from deep. Games against Dallas can be competitive, but once the defending champions took a twenty-point lead in the second quarter, Kawhi Leonard was told to rest by Coach Popovich--as the more important playoffs loom near, winning 117-98.

1/16/18

Spurs win two impressive games versus Cavaliers, Warriors.

Patty Mills came back to life, totaling 49 points for both games
After going through a shooting slump and watching Tony Parker take up the mantle from the bench, Patty Mills had himself a resurgence in these two national television thrillers. Over the course of both games, the Australian sensation made thirteen 3PTers, especially one with 37.2 seconds left to tie the game versus the Cavaliers. The Spurs needed some joy after Jeremy Lamb's 40-point eruption was spoiled after a stolen victory by the New York Knicks in the second half, costing the Spurs just their sixth loss at home this season as their shooting on the floor suffered.

First, the Cavaliers paid Texas a visit in a high-scoring affair that saw LeBron "The King" James dunking over Kawhi Leonard in crunch time and the Cavaliers taking off for two stunning runs that nearly netted them the road victory, leading 110-104 with just a minute to spare. The game was decided by only 4 points, with a spark by Dwyane Wade nearly pulling off the upset after a ferocious steal-then-dunk over Bismack Biyombo. Kawhi went head-to-head in his most bitter rivalry with LeBron James, both superstars playing one-up on each other late. Leonard made a clutch three to close the gap, as Isaiah Thomas was nearly at 100%, scoring mostly well and racking up assists to compensate for it, finishing with 8 points and 10 assists.

Rudy Gay played savior for the Spurs in both games
Rudy Gay would play hero in both showdowns, scoring clutch buckets late to give the Spurs the lead once more, one being a dunk over Kevin Love with 28.4 seconds left versus Cleveland and a layup-turned-foul against the Warriors with only 10 seconds remaining in the contest. After a steal by Pau Gasol on the inbound play, Gay would make a layup and draw another foul to give the Spurs a 111-115 lead over Cleveland. Isaiah Thomas would nearly lose the ball to Mills, causing a scramble with just 6 seconds left, and Kevin Love would miss the would-be game-tying shot. Kawhi Leonard would go on to ice the game at the free throw line, as Thomas' final heave clanged off the backboard.

The Warriors' sheer firepower nearly took over the game as soon as it started, but hot shooting by Mills brought San Antonio back into the contest. Biyombo stuggled against Golden State, but Pau Gasol and Rudy Gay were able to help shore up the scoring effort. Rookie Jordan Bell's raw athleticism proved to be a frustration for Biyombo. Iman Shumpert (13 points, 1 steal) had a nice competitive exchange with Klay Thompson (22 points) in this one, as Kevin Durant struggled from the field, missing what would be the final shot for Golden State on a cold 5-13 performance for just 12 points. Steph Curry made his well-known bombs from way deep, as well, shooting for 20 points on 4-10 3PT%, debilitating the Spurs defense with 18 assists. Golden State made only 8 three-pointers out of 28 attempts, as SA shot 42% from range.

Patty Mills played with passion in these two victories.
The Warriors went up by six points with 1:30 left to play, before Leonard made a three ball. Durant's monster jam past Leonard and Gay would give the Warriors a 104-99 lead, but Pau Gasol would erase it at the charity stripe. Gay would block Bell's layup at the rim next, and Leonard would draw the foul to cut the lead to a point. However, Draymond Green's and-1 over Gasol would once again increase the lead to 4 with a minute to play. Gasol would make a big jump shot for the Spurs, only for Green to make a reverse layup, only for Rudy Gay to catch the quick pass by Gasol for a tomahawk jam. The Spaniard would block Bell's attempt next, and Kawhi would get his hand on the ball from Durant, leading to an outlet pass to Mills on the fast break for the Spurs, although Mills would miss the go-ahead corner 3PTer.

Time for Rudy Gay to catch the offensive rebound, Coach Popovich to call a timeout, and for Gay to give them the lead on the and-1 drive to the basket. Leonard smothered Durant on the final play and although it was a good look after a nice spin move, the Warriors star missed his 3PT shot attempt, giving San Antonio a 109-110 victory! Only down a point, it may have been wiser to try a closer effort, but such is the Warriors style. Jordan Bell finished with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

The Spurs move to 59-15, with only 9 games left on the schedule before the playoffs begin. They are still technically behind the Warriors, only because they've won one game less so far this season. The defending champions could very well top Golden State in the standings, but topping them and Cleveland in these two battles is certainly more rewarding. The Spurs shot 50% from 3PT range (18-36) versus the Cavaliers. Bismack Biyombo had 8 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 1 block in the win, behind 23 points by Rudy Gay. Kevin Love was the high man for Cleveland with 23 points. In the victory over Golden State, the Spurs missed 9 free throws which will have to improve in future meetings.

Spurs soar after Warriors victory, win 17 straight games

The Spurs look unbeatable, winning 17 games in a row
After defending home by a narrow margin of victory, the Spurs have used its defeat of the Warriors as a catapult to reel off 17 straight wins, including a few games before the Golden State battle. Rudy Gay has recovered from his ankle injury, and recently had 22 points in a come-from-behind win against the Sacramento Kings, a team that looked poised to take its place among only four teams in the league to defeat the Spurs at home. San Antonio won 105-106 once Tony Parker's go-ahead 3PTer splashed in to the roar of the crowd; Kawhi Leonard had 20 points in the victory, and Patty Mills had 15 points with 10 assists.

"I told you guys I'd still have my moment," Parker joked with reporters after the game. A clutch shot indeed, the veteran point guard has stepped up lately due to some struggles by Patty Mills.

Jeremy Lamb has seen an uptick in contribution, but to even more surprise was sharpshooter Bryn Forbes erupting for a career-high 27 points, making several shots from deep and even driving to the rim. Forbes had a nice drive in the Kings game, too, adding some punch from the bench. Bismack Biyombo continues to be a defensive presence, and Pau Gasol played tremendously in a win over the Grizzlies.

The Spurs now have 14 games left on the schedule, still trailing Golden State, but boasting the league's best home win/loss record, now only one win behind the Warriors. They could potentially go 69-13 if they never lose again, but it seems like fatigue may be setting in. Every opponent is now gunning to break the streak, which included a close victory over the Trailblazers in Portland. Their tremendous late surge comfortably improves upon last year's record, which Popovich is proud for. "We are on a roll right now. We can't let ourselves get a big head, as we know the Playoffs are right around the corner and every team goes back to zero, but I'm real proud of my guys for the hard work and tenacity they've shown during this streak."

The most exciting patch of games left includes a triple-header for the Spurs, in which they'll face the Cavaliers, the Warriors and lastly the Thunder. Coach Popovich will likely begin to rest more players to be healthy and fresh for the Playoffs, but surely there are some bragging rights and psychological chess at stake in those three games. The Spurs finish the season on the road, taking on the Jazz.

The Cavaliers match-up will be the Spurs first look at Isaiah Thomas in the lineup.

Spurs edge Warriors in showdown, 117-121 at home.

The Spurs and Warriors went to war, but Kawhi Leonard's shot won the battle.
Klay Thompson (21 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists) kicked this showdown off with a 'splash' from 3PT range putting the scoreboard operator to work in this potent teaser spectacle of what's coming in the playoffs.

The Warriors climbed to an 11-point lead, but the Spurs rallied due to great defense by Bismack Biyombo (15 points, 11 rebounds) and his five blocks that spurred a fast break advantage. Rookie Jordan Bell had a career-high 20 points as the starting center for Golden State.

It was still neck-and-neck from that point in the second half, but Kawhi Leonard's ferocious highlight jam and mid-range jumper over the long arms of Kevin Durant gave the Spurs a two-point lead that they would never lose in the final minute. The Claw finished with 23 points and 7 rebounds. The Warriors resorted to intentional fouling at that point, but it proved folly as Patty Mills (17 points, 5 three-pointers) made them pay from the charity stripe before the Spurs drove up the court and found an open Iman Shumpert (5 points, 2 steals) for a dagger 3PTer in the corner, satisfying the pumped-up fans in attendance.

Steph Curry (36 points) had a fabulous showing, nonetheless, with 6 three-pointers from the parking lot and 11 assists, scoring 20 points in the first half. Draymond Green fouled out and found himself being upset at some calls, in his fiery nature, only scoring 7 points, and Kevin Durant (17 points) did not have his best game. San Antonio won the final period 43-36, and that is while admittedly missing 9 free throws--a slight concern. Both teams only had 17 turnovers combined, which made for a proficient contest with both teams shooting over 50% and over 40% from 3PT territory.

The Spurs now move 2-0 in their season series with Golden State, but 2-0 will mean a lot more this May. The absence of Rudy Gay meant more minutes for Pau Gasol (22 points, 9 rebounds), but he had a strong showing and the Spurs did not suffer too much without Gay, although they will be glad to have him back (hopefully) for the likely Western Conference Finals duel with the Warriors. Golden State's win streak is snapped, as the Spurs move to 13 straight victories as they next host Atlanta.

12/31/17

Spurs dominate Thunder, win 96-72 in OKC

Russell Westbrook's squad was held to just 72 points in the loss.
Pau Gasol had a double-double and the Spurs led by as many as 27 points, winning big on the road, and the rebound battle, 10 of which were claimed by the Spaniard, with 21 points. Tony Parker had 13 points, shooting 3-4 from deep range. Josh Smith also had 12 rebounds in the team-oriented victory, as the Spurs prepare to face their worst foe, the Warriors, next. It's official now, both of them are sporting tremendous win streaks: Warriors at 16 wins, and the Spurs at 12.

San Antonio's star players were able to rest in the second half, as the Spurs opened the period on a 10-0 run, almost as stunning as the 20-4 beginning to the contest. Westbrook was double-teamed in this one, with the Spurs daring Andre Roberson to shoot (1-7 from the field). Westbrook had one of his worst showings to date, boasting triple-doubles galore in contrast normally, scoring just 2 points (1-6) with 5 rebounds and 7 assists, surely missing Carmelo Anthony in this game as the Spurs missed Rudy Gay a bit less due to their easy task tonight. OKC shot a putrid 37% from the floor, compared to the Spurs 51%, leaving Russ to raise his hands in forlorn disgust. 11 blocks by the Spurs sealed this mauling.

The Spurs will face the Warriors next at home, and all eyes will be watching the most likely preview of this season's Western Conference Finals. The Spurs hit the 50 game win mark tonight, with Golden State sitting at 53 victories respectively.

Spurs win streak grows, endures past Rockets in 2OT thriller

Kawhi Leonard was the answer tonight with 48 points.
Since the Biyombo/Young trade, the Spurs have now won 10 straight games after the All-Star Game, one win away from 50 as the NBA season reaches its home stretch. The Spurs expected a close matchup with the Rockets, especially with a healthy Chris Paul in the mix, but double overtime was surely a surprise to all lucky souls watching this spectacle as the Spurs somehow valiantly won its 3rd of four total games against Houston.

Kawhi Leonard was visibly tired as the first overtime period ended with another stalemate, forced to watch James Harden just barely miss a 3PT dagger that would have devastated the home crowd in San Antonio. Harden also missed the original potential game-winner in regulation after the Spurs made a resilient 45-36 scoring advantage comeback in the fourth quarter. Harden finished with 35 points and 11 assists.

However, it was Chris Paul's night for the Rockets, who led by 14 points in the 3rd quarter and looked destined for a victory to snap the win streak and win an evasive game in San Antonio, which few teams have done so far (the Spurs have the best home win/loss record). He was on fire from deep and threatened the Spurs with a second All-Star playmaker to contend with. CP3's crossover actually caused Rudy Gay an ankle injury in the 4th quarter, when hope fell frail for the Spurs were it not for a brilliant twist of fortune, spoiling Gay's efficient shooting night (25 points, 10/14 shooting).

The bench for San Antonio answered in stunning fashion, as the Rockets sizable lead with 5 minutes to spare on the clock was depleted bit by bit, shot after shot, stop after stop (and that says a lot, with the Rockets still scoring so well, denying the comeback initially). Patty Mills shockingly found his shot from long range after having a cold three quarters, finishing ultimately with 27 points and focusing on distribution with 8 assists until he found his shot. Huge shots by the Australian sensation truly sparked SA's comeback into motion, and Leonard only finished the job, hitting clutch cold-blooded 3PTers and driving furiously into the paint, drawing fouls and making the basket. Pau Gasol (24 points, 16 rebounds) also hit a clutch jumper to pad the lead in the second overtime, after Leonard had performed two steals leading to easy baskets for the Spurs.

The Spurs finally bested the Rockets, 168-152, a wild total score, winning the overtime periods 42-28 after the early run put things out of reach for Houston. Bismack Biyombo has been a defensive stalwart, a much-needed presence down low for the Spurs, since the trade and has nearly gotten a triple double or quadruple-double in some cases with blocks, steals and rebounds, benefiting on the scoring end from San Antonio's ball movement. The big man finished at 10 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks before fouling out, which Houston's Clint Capela (24 points, 15 rebounds) nearly did.

Golden State and San Antonio will collide soon

In the victory, Tony Parker helped fill in for Mills' rough start with 14 points, also hitting a stepback 3PTer in double overtime. The Spurs also won the battle down low, 76 to 64 for points in the paint. The Spurs sound strategy, courtesy of Coach Pop's knowledge, saw them fouling Chris Paul as the Spurs held a two point lead in the first overtime period, watching CP3 tie the contest, but ensuring that they got a good shot in response (rather than let Houston run down the clock and take the last shot). Patty Mills missed a good-looking 3PT shot before Harden's, as noted above, however. Josh Smith also had a nice showing replacing Gay after his injury in regulation, a nice dunk and solid defense.

In the loss, Chris Paul had an amazing 19 assists to go with 35 points. Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson combined for 24 points. The Spurs would go on to soundly defeat the Kings at home, by nearly 30 points, behind Josh Smith's strong showing having been given the starting job as Gay will be out for at least another game, adding some drama to the next meeting with Russell Westbrook's OKC Thunder--the only team left in the Spurs way toward a showdown with the Golden State Warriors. Leonard, Mills and Gasol rested in this game and watched J-Smoove smash 6 blocks, 24 points and 8 rebounds. The Spurs won 111-83, as the Kings were cold shooting on the court. The bench was strong for San Antonio, crushing SAC's by 30 points in comparison. Davis Bertans scored 16 points and 7 rebounds; Iman Shumpert had 14 points and 2 steals; Dejounte Murray had 13 points, 8 assists with 3 steals and Bryn Forbes had 11 points on three long-balls.

Fans are looking forward to the Spurs possibly being on a 12-game win streak which would mark 50 wins on the season so far, as they imminently host their greatest threat in the west, Steph Curry and co. Golden State has won 15 straight games, but hey--no pressure. It is just the second meeting between these two juggernauts, as the Spurs stunned the Warriors on the road to open the season.

Spurs win four straight; trade Thaddeus Young to Magic.

Bismack Biyombo is a tenacious rebounder and shot blocker.
The Spurs have won four straight games, despite losing Kawhi Leonard to injury. With the trade deadline looming, it was likely the Spurs were going to make a play as they feel they're not quite there yet to make a championship defense.

The result: Thaddeus Young is out, and Bismack Biyombo is a Spur. Biyombo, general manager R.C. Buford hopes, will become the Spurs rim protector for the foreseeable future, as Pau Gasol's defensive liabilities are well-known. When the Spurs offense struggles, their defense is usually strong enough to make up for it, but out of the 14 losses the team has suffered this season, some nights its interior defense is really, really bad. Pau Gasol has fallen into foul trouble as well as a result, which neutralizes one of the team's scoring options. Thaddeus Young has been decent since arriving in San Antonio last season, but being the only player with a large-enough contract for the deal and giving some lackluster play this season made Young expendable for the sake of the bigger picture in San Antonio's dynasty dream.

Also on the move outward is Joffrey Lauvergne, who's been a solid backup center for the Spurs. With some hustle plays, he can help the Magic not miss Biyombo so much, and his offensive talent is easily more reliable than Biyombo's, whose defensive prowess and relative youth was still appealing enough for the Spurs to pull the trigger. Biyombo's contract was the other half of a misfire from the old front office in Orlando, as they have declined options on both Elfrid Payton and Mario Hezonja to keep the team salary flexible as it hopes to discover an identity moving forward. Hezonja will join San Antonio in exchange for a pair of 2018 and 2019 draft picks, as the 6'8" Croation shooter hopes to bounce back in his young career now with the Spurs behind Kawhi Leonard and Josh Smith on the wing. If it doesn't pan out, Hezonja will become an unrestricted free agent.

This agreement also frees up Pau Gasol to come off the bench, where he's had his better play so far this season, although he's also been a decent starter. Also with the strong play by first-year Spur, Rudy Gay, it was only a matter of time before Thaddeus Young would be on the bench too often. In Orlando, he'll have ample opportunity to carve out more playing time and explore his hybrid SF/PF talent.

Spurs get buried by Nuggets, lose 117-154 at home.

The Spurs managed to shoot 49% from the floor, despite going 24% from 3PT territory, but it was atrocious defense and a lack of reactive rotations that allowed the Nuggets to shoot 61% and win again in the AT&T Center. Fittingly, former Defensive Player of the Year, Kawhi Leonard's absence was sorely missed in this suffering.

The Nuggets barely won the first period, but erupted in the second, winning that one 42-23, boasting a 20-point lead at halftime. Denver's bench annihilated the Spurs 83-27, and Leonard's replacements did not meet expectations. Rudy Gay went 5-18 and 3-13 from 3PT range for a meager 13 points. Iman Shumpert was the high scorer for San Antonio, and that is quite telling, finishing with 25 points. Thaddeus Young fared better than Gay, starting at power forward, with 20 points, but only 3 rebounds as Nikola Jokic's 16 points and 13 rebounds happened.

Most of all, the "Manimal" Kenneth Faried crashed in 27 points and 12 rebounds, going 100% tonight on 10-10 shooting, i.e. dunking past Pau Gasol who was one if not ten steps slow tonight. Anderson Varejao and Joffrey Lauvergne did little to help, as Paul Millsap also feasted on the poor defensive effort (19 points, 9 rebounds), with the Nuggets tallying 86 points in the paint. Denver's prowess from long range also hurt the Spurs, who managed to cut the lead to 12 in the 3rd quarter, but the Nuggets surged again winning the final period 49-27, silencing the already-stunned crowd. The Spurs offense was splintered, as well, compared to Denver.

"I'm sick to my stomach," Coach Popovich said after the game. "Do you have any Pepto-Bismol?"

Patty Mills had just 13 points; Tony Parker finished with 9 and 5 assists. It may not have been the worst loss in Spurs franchise history, but it's the biggest loss in quite some time. Shots are shots, but defense just needs to be on-point, especially for the Spurs team culture. The team did not flow tonight.

Spurs outlast 76ers 119-133, but Leonard suffers toe injury.

San Antonio's best player will be out of action for 1-2 weeks.
The Spurs wound up winning big against the upstart Philadelphia squad, after an exciting face-off between Ben Simmons and Kawhi Leonard, but San Antonio arguably "lost" when its star came up hobbling after a made 3PTer.

"I was just about to pull Kawhi out of the game when it happened, so that's rotten luck for us and bad timing on our part," Coach Popovich said post-game, glad for the victory but aware of the challenge that will follow his team now with Leonard out of action.

The Spurs had gained a sizable lead midway through the 2nd quarter, then the 76ers sparked back into the contest, capped off by a 3PT bomb from JJ Reddick to end the half. The comeback made for a fight in the 3rd that culminated in the Spurs obtaining a small lead again. It would grow in the 4th quarter, despite Leonard's injury, courtesy of solid defense on Phillie's shooters and Rudy Gay's stellar shooting showcase, finishing with 35 points, a season-high so far with the team on 12-23 shooting. Joel Embid got the best of Pau Gasol in a big-man battle, the "Process" scoring 29 points and 11 rebounds over the Spaniard's 16 points and 9 rebounds. Patty Mills had an off night, but finished with 14 points and 9 assists. Shumpert had 9 points and 8 assists in a nice showing, too. In the loss, Ben Simmons (the likely Rookie of the Year) had 18 points, 10 rebounds and a staggering 18 assists. JJ Redick had 17 points, but overall the 76ers were a touch chilly from the floor.

Rudy Gay's strong play lately has helped the Spurs
This bittersweet victory comes after a strong home win against the Dallas Mavericks; the Spurs won 127-98, scorching Dallas in the 3rd quarter for a 34-11 scoring advantage. Leonard finished with a triple-double (22 points/11 rebounds/10 assists). The Mavericks shot 39% and 3-29 from 3PT range, compared to SA's 50% overall shooting and 42% from deep. A tough loss to the Pelicans on the road preceded this victory, behind the big men Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins, the latter finishing with 30 points and 20 rebounds. "The Brow" would foul out, but after scoring 26 points and 13 rebounds, himself. Leonard went 0-7 from range, 5-14 overall, as the rest of the Spurs also were off the mark. Leonard boasted 31 points in a road victory in Toronto, winning 119-110, aided by Pau Gasol's 24 points and 23 points by Patty Mills. In the loss, DeMarr DeRozan had 25 points. Kyle Lowry and 16 assists in the loss.

Most excitingly, the OKC Thunder came to San Antonio and left with a loss other than on the scoreboard. Carmelo Anthony was playing perfectly, giving OKC a strong lead (34 points - 12 rebounds - 13-24 FG%) before rolling his ankle on a drive to the basket. The Thunder nearly held off the Spurs, due to 26 points by Steven Adams, a triple-double by Russell Westbrook and 16 points by Paul George. But it was Patty Mills' 12 assists and 4th quarter assault from long range (8-15 3P%), finishing with 24 points, behind Kawhi's 33 (10-14 from the field). Rudy Gay chipped in 20 points and 8 rebounds, and SA's bench would be the difference. Gasol had 18 points and Iman Shumpert had 15 points and 6 assists. Parker finished with 13 points/6 assists, as well. The Spurs won 140-131 in a high-scoring thriller, with the Spurs shooting 57% and 43% 3PT from the floor.

In Retrospect: Eight Game Win Streak

The Spurs and Warriors remain in a dogfight for the Western Conference crown.
This win streak propelled the Spurs back into the #2 slot in the Western Conference, with wins over the Hawks, Bucks, Lakers, Suns, Hornets, Raptors, Bucks, Nuggets, and Timberwolves. The defending champions are practically locked on a collision course with the Golden State Warriors come April.

Thon Maker had 23 points and 17 rebounds for the Bucks, but the "Greek Freak" had a modest showing, allowing the Spurs to win 131-125 behind Rudy Gay's 27 points. Josh Smith had a strong game with 18 points, behind Gasol's 18 points as well, and Kawhi's typical 19 points. The Lakers came ready to play, until the final period that saw the Spurs demolish Lonzo Ball's young squad 38-13 on the scoreboard. Kawhi finished with 23 points, 130-101. Patty Mills had his usual handful of long balls; Rudy Gay had 15 and Gasol's double-double compared to Tony Parker's 10 assists.

The Suns lost to San Antonio in Phoenix, as Pau Gasol had a flash from the past with 37 points (32 in the first half) including the game-sealing 3PTer, also with 3 blocks. The 7'0" Spaniard shot 16-22 from the field and 3-4 from distance, as the Spurs won 128-119 on the road. Leonard had 27 points, as well. The Suns gained a 12 point advantage at one point, but Rudy Gay's defense and Thaddeus Young's 3PT improvement helped San Antonio claw back into the contest. Devin Booker had an off night, having to deal with Leonard and Shumpert hounding him. The Suns had 15 turnovers and went cold from range, 6-21%. The "Spur-fection" ball movement made for a highlight when Shumpert got a nice corner 3PTer after a myriad of passes that had Phoenix scrambling uncontrollably.

Patty Mills has surged past early season slump, shooting .44% from 3PT range

Prior to the Nuggets revenge victory, they had a matchup nightmare as San Antonio's strategy payed dividends. Iman Shumpert had a season-high 25 points to match Kawhi's, the Spurs winning 133-116 on the road as Gasol and Anderson Varejao frustrated Millsap and Jokic all game long. Jokic had only 12 points. The Spurs scored 80 points in the second half, blistering Denver 37-25 in the first quarter, as Denver turned the ball over 19 times. History repeats itself, indeed, as the season series now stands at 1-1 so far.

The Timberwolves nearly snapped SA's streak in an exciting affair, due to Mills shooting poorly. Lamb, Gasol and Gay provided the early spark for the Spurs. Minnesota's 20-7 run gave them the lead, however, until a 12-4 run into the 4th quarter brought the Spurs back into the mix. Mills redeemed his team from the jaws of defeat, as did Kawhi, both stars hitting 3PTers late. Rudy Gay would get a nice screen by Leonard, hitting a go-ahead shot with 49.6s on the clock. Jimmy Butler would hit a 3PTer later, but Mills would counter it for 105-110 advantage, winning 108-112 as Andrew Wiggins missed a corner 3PTer at the buzzer. Leonard had 18 points and 9 rebounds (7-11%; 4-4 3PT%); Mills recovered for 25 points finishing with 7 long balls; Pau Gasol's strong double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Karl Anthony-Towns went 0-4 from deep, finishing lightly with 15 points and 19 rebounds. Jamal Crawford sparked the Wolves early off the bench with 15 points and his trademark 4PT play after drawing a foul. Wiggins had 17; Taj Gibson had 17/8; Teague had 12 assists with 17 points, but gave the ball over 5 times.
